    i might be wrong, but i believe lu xiao jun used to be a sprinter and he started weightlifting fairly late, around 19 yo or so.

      i heard that as well. i wonder at what age he learned the lifts, i.e., whether he learned them early on for his work as a sprinter, or whether he first learned them at 19. either way, very impressive.

    I believe I read he was asked that after last years worlds and I remember reading he switched at 18. He also said he best back squat up till that time was 300kg. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T4oXec3D2SM shows him doing what looks like 245kg pause squat with the 2nd rep being a regular squat. Did you catch him squatting at the training hall?

    It would be great if you could give us a perspective on the American lifters and their performance. USAW did not do a good job of keeping us abreast.
